The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and World Health Organization (WHO) jointly organized a workshop on Food Control Systems - Modern Approaches in the Near East Region on 19 January 2003 in the WHO Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean in Cairo, Egypt. The workshop was held to enable countries of the ~ e ~ i otno 'sh are experiences with other countries in similar situations, allowing for effective sharing of information. The programme focused on optimizing the establishment of integrated, comprehensive food control systems through the introduction of the revised FAOIWHO publication Guidelines for strengthening national food control systems and presenting country examples on best practices, incorporating important aspects and problem areas such as the multisectoral involvement in the area of food safety. It was understood that the FA0 and WHO sponsored participants would also participate in the Second Session of the Regional Codex Coordinating Committee for the Near East (CCNEA~)o, rganized in WHOIEMRO from 20 to 23 January 2003, as members of their respective country delegations. Twenty participants from 7 member states attended the workshop, as well as one observer from an international nongovernmental organization. The programme and list of participants are included as Annexes 1 and 2. Results of the workshop evaluatioti are included as Annex 3. Mr Ezzeddine Boutrif, Senior Officer, Consumer Protection and Quality Control Group of the Food Quality and Standards Service, FAO, opened the workshop. Mr Boutrif welcomed the participants to the workshop on behalf of FAO, and thanked WHO for its collaboration in the organization of the workshop. He emphasized the importance of food control systems in the Region, especially in light of the fact that 60% to 90% of the food supply for the countries of the Region was obtained through food imports. Dr Ramez Mahaini, Acting Director, I-lealth Protection and Promotion, WHOIEMRO, welcomed the workshop participants on behalf of WHO. Dr Mahaini outlined many of the recent advances in food safety control systems, most of which had occurred in the industrialized world
