INTRODUCTION The i n d i r e c t fluorescent antibody (IFA) t e s t , because it has a high s p e c i f i c i t y , is comparatively simple t o perform and u s e s a n t i g e n which is r e l a t i v e l y easy t o prepare, has been adopted by a number of l a b o r a t o r i e s throughout the world. Although s e r o l o g i c a l s t u d i e s of malaria date back to more than 50 years, it is w i t h t h e i n t r o d u c t i o n of the IFA test Ghat seroepidemiological s t u d i e s of malaria began t o be c a r r i e d out i n great number (Lepes, 1972; Armstrong, 1972). Regarding the s e n s i t i v i t y of the IFA t e s t the opinions of i n v e s t i g a t o r s d i f f e r widely. V a r i a t i o n s i n s e n s i t i v i t y may be due to a number of f a c t o r s :
