Excerpt
It has often been said that health education ccoounltdro t 'oa as ulcocnegs sw, abyu tt oswo afradr mthaekrien f ams ablaereina little evidence that this is indeed the case. For a long time it has been observed that, where the location provides the opportunity, people leave malarious areas between sunset and sunrise for healthier surroundings, where they spend the night and thus avoid contracting malaria. For example, until the 1930s the sparse population of the Pontine Marshes, near Rome, could be seen late each afternoon climbing from their fields in the plain toward the villa es hi h in the nearby hills, away from the reac f of t \ e night-biting anopheline mosquitos. In some valleys o Nepal this daily migration is still taking place. People have learned from experience how to avoid the scourge of malaria, but not as a result of health education: nobody has taught them to leave the plains for the hills. Rather, this is an avoidance mechanism developed through centuries of community contact with malaria.
