Excerpt: The mutagenic potential of diethylene glycol monobutyl ether (diEGBE) was examined with a Tier I battery of in vitro assays followed by a Tier I1 in vivo Drosophila sex-linked recessive lethal assay. The in vitro battery was designed to measure point mutations in prokaryotes (Salmonella mutagenicity assay) and eukaryotes (L5178Y mouse lymphoma assay). The battery also measures changes at the chromosome level (in vitro cytogenetics with CHO cells) and nonspecific DNA damage as measured by unscheduled DNA synthesis (UDS) in primary cultures of rat hepatocytes.
