Preface: THE title of this book, finance capitalism, is employed as a concession to popular usage, for this study is essentially an inquiry into the nature of the non-financial and the financial institutions of Security capitalism which is a more accurate term. The study is based on the general theory that economic processes are determined not by laws which remain fixed but by institutions which change. The evolution of these institutions is therefore traced for the purpose of indicating the principles of private and public control which should be exercised in the future in order that the system may produce the highest results from the standpoint not only of individual wealth but also of social welfare. The non-financial institutions considered in this study include the political, social, economic, philosophic and legal forces which have moulded the evolution of the system.
