D'importants travaux d'ensemble, plus particuliirement en Egypte (Taylor et a]., 1956; Schmidt et al., 1960), en Grice (Theiler et al., 1960; Pavlatos & Smith, 1964), en Israel (Ben-Porath et al., 1966), en Italie (Verani et al., 1967), et en France mediterranknne (Panthier, 1968), ont precise au cours des quinze dernieres annks la repartition des arbovirus dans le bassin mediterranten, leur incidence dans la pathologie infectieuse et ont analyse les principaux maillons de leur chaine epid8miologique. Ainsi non seulement des affections saisonniires connues de longue date, mais certaines Cpidemies, ont-elles pu etre rattachees a une Btiologie virale prtcise: virus de la dengue a Athenes en 1927, virus de la fievre a phlebotomes parmi les troupes alliees en 1943-1944, virus West Nile en Israel en 1951-1952. Completant habituellement les enquetes immunolngiques, des isolements de virus ont ete realists parallilement chez I'homme ou I'animal malades, chez le vecteur et parfois chez l'animal reservo~
