Filariasis is a major public health problem with an cstiniated 750 million people exposed lo risk of infection and SO rnlllion cases in llic \vorld. India accounts for about 50% oi the at-lisk population and about 60% of all cases (I). Dieth!lcarbamazine (DEC) has been the drug ol choice and is known for its excellent microfilaiicidal activity (2-4). Dllferenl methods oS drug dellvery - 6mg;kg:day for 13 days (5, 6) for selected cases or mass. spaccd doses in different regimens (1, 2. 7-11) h a v e bccn attempted with varying degrees of impact. DEC-mcdicated salt has been used foi control of lymphatic filariasis in India (12, 13); Lhe la~.gest trial was carried out in Karaikal and the immerliate and delayed epirlerniologlcal nnpilcts have been reported (14). This article desciibes the implementation proccss in Karaikal and presents the spidelniological assessment data.
