A hundred and ninety-one cases of human plague wth 24 deaths were notlfied to the World Health Orgamation in 1981. Ths is the lowest number of cases ever formally notified for human plague. The correspondmg figures for 1980 were 505 and 56 respectively (Table I!,The decline m human plague notifications was noted in all countnes reporting the dsease but was very marked in Asian countnes--from 283 cases in 1980 to 13 in 198 1 (1 1 cases reported from Viet Nam and one each from Burma and China).
